EDITOR'S NOTE: After several days of intense contemplation, meditation, and prescription medication, along with a couple of day trips to Boulder, our resident 'non-believer-in-anything', also known as Hammer, has decided to delve into the astrological sciences. The following is his take and his take only.

Virgo
(The Virgin)
Aug 23-Sept 22

The stars say you love tennis, racquetball, swimming, sailing, fishing and biking. No wonder you’re a virgin, who has the time? Virgo is an earth sign and the sixth sign of the Zodiac, which means absolutely nothing to me, just thought you might want to know. Most Virgos are shy and waiting for the perfect lover; good luck with that. Your sign rules the sinuses, respiratory systems and bowels. How these are all related, I’m not sure, but I’m thinking they are why you always seem to have a cold, a cough and are, well we won’t get into that. You have an analytical and critical approach to relationships, which is an instant turnoff to men, hence the Virgin sign. Celebrity Virgins, Virgos or whatever you want to call yourselves include Mrs. Hammer, explaining why I never seem to get any this time of year.
Libra
(The Scales)
Sept 23-Oct 23

You tend towards procrastination and vacillation, which we will definitely get to later, or maybe not. Librans love to be admired, especially while standing naked and holding up a set of scales. Your love of justice makes you fair-minded, your love of ice cream makes you big-behinded. Okay, that may not be a word, but this is my column, not yours. Your flowers include roses, daisies, violets and orchids, which my exhaustive astrological research has shown means, well, you like pretty flowers. Libra has given us artists such as Arthur Miller, Mario Puzo, John Le Carre’ and Oscar Wilde along with David Lee Roth, Hillary Duff and Tanya Tucker, showing there really is balance in the world.

Saved By Ruin: New Perspective
Album Advance

For years, Saved By Ruin has brought their eclectic sense of music to the scene, entertaining each and every crowd they play in front of every time. In 2008, this all-female metal ensemble delivered the four-song EP entitled Explore And Reminisce to their fans. Now, on Thursday, June 10, for the first time, Saved By Ruin will unveil their debut full-length album New Perspective at the Gothic Theatre during their CD release show.

About Saved By Ruin

Originally formed in 2006, Saved By Ruin ( myspace.com/savedbyruin ) has been an ever-evolving, never stagnant, force in the Colorado metal scene. The band consists Angelique (vocals), Hayley (guitar), Shonna (bass), Laura (drums) and, as the newest addition to the group, Fritz (guitar), who joined the group after they recorded their album.

Their musical style seems to come from every different direction, making the task of trying to place them into a specific subgenre of metal a senseless act. Utilizing concepts from old and new school metal, punk, alternative, and damn near every other formulation of rock, their sound can be described simply as Saved By Ruin.

While still taking their musical career very seriously, the members of the band also make sure that they are having the time of their lives while doing what they love. Just one look at their live show, or by spending one minute with them before or after the set, and you will see a group of musicians that has found the perfect balance between professionalism and fun.

The New Album: New Perspective

Saved By Ruin - New Perspective cover ...Click to view larger image Saved By Ruin’s newest, and first full-length, release New Perspective is an 11-track collection of songs anyone even mildly familiar with the band will know and love. Showing a close affection for their home state, the cover displays a storm brewing in front of a silhouetted downtown Denver background and a highway exit sign showing the directions Ft. Collins, Aurora/Limon and Denver in the bottom corner.

In May 2009, the band traveled to Knoxville, TN for a two-week recording session. Some familiar names in the music industry worked alongside Saved By Ruin on the recording. Producing the album was former Straight Line Stitch drummer Patrick Haynes, and it was engineered by White Chapel founder and former guitarist Brandon Cagle.

Kicking off the album is, "Perineum," a storm of an intro track before leading into the musical assault, "Historic Unravel." This song, newer than several others on the album, shows how progressively heavier of a band Saved By Ruin has evolved into. This song is a definite example of the broad range of styles the band incorporates into their music, going from blisteringly heavy and downright evil sounding at times to an almost alternative style of chorus. All of which is done extremely well.

Following up is, "Right," a song that music fans have seen change as far as the arrangement in concerned since they first started playing it live. The version appearing on the album is the pinnacle of such changes. This track demonstrates their musical writing ability, by not only displaying separate styles, but layering them together at the same time. And the more relatively recent additions of leads into the song add a great amount of depth.

The next song on the album is aptly titled, "Wicked," which features a great transition into the chorus. The change of pace melodic chorus then pushes the tempo up again. This song also showcases the lyrical poetry that has become a Saved By Ruin staple.

"Blood," is the first of four songs on the album to have originally appeared on the bands previous EP. However, all of those songs have received a facelift in the arrangement department. It begins with an eastern style of vocals before the song drives forward in a much heavier manner. All of this comes full circle by the end of the song when the same intro vocals are sung on top of the heavier riffs that had earlier followed.

"Sinking," is another song appearing on the previous EP, and this one seems to have seen the most noticeable rearrangement of the four tracks. But don’t get used to one particular part in the song, because they will be changing it up on you soon enough, progressing from the solo into a dramatic climax that keeps punching you back into the corner. This song serves as the perfect setup for what’s to come next.

The following song, "Unbroken," is arguably the standout track on the album. Each part in this song screams Saved By Ruin, and is a perfect all-encompassing piece that captures the essence of the band. From beginning to end, this song traps the listener into a roller coaster ride of a musical journey. But just as a bit of fair warning, don’t be surprised if your neck is sore and throbbing from banging your head by the time this song is over.

"The Revenge Song," of which Saved By Ruin also has a music video for (watch it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wK_-70X0Pvw), and, "That Said," are the other two tracks that appeared on the 2008 EP and received an updated and more complex rearrangements for the new album. "That Said," has a much stronger and more powerful edge to it on the newer version, with a darker distorted sound and more pronounced percussion sound involved.

"Do," begins with a more laid back feel to it, with some great vocal harmonies. That is before it punches you in the teeth with the chorus, slows back down for the verse, then turns around and punches you in the teeth again before you can recover from the first one. This gears you up for the album finale, "White Sand."

From the time they started performing it live, "White Sand," has pumped the blood of every crowd hearing it. The driving force behind this song is Hayley’s traveling guitar riffs spearheading the song and dictating the direction it goes. And when the song comes to a close, you truly get a sense of closure to the album with how it resolves, followed up by the contrasting sound of wind and birds chirping.

New Perspective is the kind of album that, after hearing it, makes you immensely proud of the musicians making it. What amplifies that feeling is when you have been able to see the band grow and mature musically along the way, from their beginnings to how far they have come at this point.
